Charlie Mopps, Beer Inventor

At On Tap Sports Café, where would we be without beer? If it wasn’t for beer, nothing would be on tap! So who better to thank than the inventor of beer himself, Charlie Mopps!  As described by the drinking song “Beer, Beer, Beer,” Charlie Mopps is the mythical inventor of beer.  His name is presumably meant to rhyme with two main ingredients in beer; barley and hops.

Here at On Tap, we celebrate this great figure through our Charlie Mopps Club. This club is designed to reward our customers for their continued loyalty just as Mr. Mopps has rewarded us!  Now before we provide you with all exciting details of our club, here is a little information about the man behind the myth.

History

The song that mentions Charlie Mopps is said to have originated on Royal Navy ships. It spread to countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and the United States from there.

Since the 1950s, many versions of “Beer, Beer, Beer” have been recorded.

John Foreman sang a version on a compilation of English drinking songs, The Tale of Ale.

The Clancy Brother’s created a version of the song on the album Irish Pub Songs, and the Brobdingnagian Bards, a Celtic music group recorded a version of the song for their album The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs.

The Story

The song tells about how Charlie made his great concoction in the lines “a bushel of malt, a barrel of hops, you stir it around with a stick. The kind of lubrication to make your engine tick.”

The song recognizes Charlie Mopp’s invention as something to be celebrated at a time “when all there was to drink was nothing but cups of tea.”

The song also calls for all beer drinkers and admirers of Charlie to stop at 11 p.m. every night, and remember him for five seconds.

“The Lord bless Charlie Mopps,” the song ends in celebration.

Random Facts

The Canadian beer Molson used the song in a series of advertisements in the late 1980s, with some changed lyrics.

There is a rendition of the song in the 2004 PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC game The Bard’s Tale.

The San Diego roots rock band The Fab Lushes recorded the song and perform it regularly.

Now that you know about the great inventor of beer, you are ready to join our Charlie Mopps Club! We will provide you with annual rewards just for being a member! There is no signup fee and no minimum purchase necessary. The club is however, invitation only, but see a manager for invitation details and they’ll be happy to help you out!

Bama vs. LSU

Rivalries among sports teams take an average game and make them something to really get excited about! We’ve got Giants vs. Cowboys, Yankees vs.Red Sox and in what is one of the most heated rivalries in College Football, Bama vs. LSU! On January 9th, the Alabama Crimson Tide will take on the LSU Tigers in the Bowl Champion Series game continuing a rivalry that started in 1895! At On Tap Sports Café, we’re getting ready now to see another Bama win and we’re dishing everything you need to know about the Bama vs. LSU Rivalry!

In 1895 Alabama met LSU in their first Football game that started a long-standing series among the two schools. Though the series started a long time ago, the games didn’t become consistent until 1964 when Alabama and LSU were regularly scheduled to face off during the season. Since the first game, Alabama is leading the series 45-25-5 and has the longest winning streak of 11 years from 1971-1981!

Fans of both teams live for Bama vs. LSU games. When the teams meet, more ticket requests are generated than during any other time! The game is one of the best for fans to watch because Alabama and LSU are the best teams in the conference, ranking 1st and 2nd! Since early 2000, LSU is 8-3 in the series and it’s time for Alabama to make a comeback!

Though the rivalry between Alabama and LSU has been going on for a long time, it heated up much more in 2007 when LSU’s former head coach Nick Saban took the head coaching position with the Crimson Tide. In fact, this began the era of games called “The Saban Bowl” after Alabama’s new head coach. The BCS game this year is the first time that Alabama will face LSU in a national championship game, and the first time any two teams from the same conference will face each other in the BCS game!

What are sports without famous rivalries?! The competition among Alabama and LSU is what makes the games among the best to watch and continues to keep the rivalry going. January 9th is the day of the big BCS game and at On Tap Sports Café, we can’t wait to party for the game! ‘Like’ us on Facebook for more on sports rivalries and to see our menu and specials!

On Tap Counts Down to the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl has been an American tradition for decades and we definitely show our love for it by eating and partying on Super Bowl Sunday, but do you actually know the history behind the Super Bowl? At On Tap Sports Cafe we love Super Bowl Sunday and we want to share the history with you so that you can appreciate it even more!

The very first Super Bowl was held on January 15th, 1967 in Los Angeles, California. The game was held as part of the agreement the NFL and AFL made during their merger. After the merger, each league was made into a conference and the game is now played by the champion from each conference. The winner of Super Bowl I was the Green Bay Packers, who also won Super Bowl II the following year.

The game day is now called Super Bowl Sunday, and is considered to be a holiday by many Americans. Did you know that the second largest day of food consumption for the United States is Super Bowl Sunday? Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving!

The phrase “I’m going to Disney World” when winning the Super Bowl has become an iconic answer when the winning team is asked what they’re going to do next. The first player to ever say this was Phil Simms of the New York Giants. Speaking of iconic phrases, the term “Super Bowl” was first coined by Lamar Hunt, who was the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl I.

The location of the Super Bowl is decided 3-5 years before the game and not one team has ever played the Super Bowl in their home stadium! On odd number Super Bowl years the NFC is the home team, and in even numbered games the AFC is the home team. This year during Super Bowl XLVI (46) the AFC team will be the home team.

Super Bowl XLVI is being held in Indianapolis, Indiana this year on February 5th, 2012. This will be the first Super Bowl ever played in Indianapolis, and was decided on May 20th, 2008. Can’t make it to Indianapolis this year? Come to On Tap Sports Café to party with us! We love football and the Super Bowl is no exception. We’ll be partying all football season and you can watch every game with us! We’ve got the NFL Sunday ticket here and we want to share it with you! ‘Like’ us on Facebook for more information and updates on our Super Bowl Specials!

Oktoberfest Beers at On Tap Sports Café

For beer-drinkers everywhere, October marks the beginning of a month dedicated to great beer.  Oktoberfest!  The first Oktoberfest was held over 200 years ago in 1810 in Munich, Germany.  Americans have been celebrating Oktoberfest all throughout October.  On Tap Sports Cafe has some of the best Oktoberfest beers on tap.

Oktoberfest beer is traditionally brewed during the fall, and breweries are beginning to enter their new brews into the market now. Yuengling fans can finally enjoy an Oktoberfest beer because Yuengling is introducing its very first Oktoberfest beer! Yuengling promises that their Oktoberfest brew is a true representation of original Oktoberfest style, copper in color and a medium bodied beer. You can find it for the first time on tap at On Tap Sports Café!

Bob’s 47 Oktoberfest brew is definitely not new to the Oktoberfest market. Named after Bob Werkowitch, Boulevard Brewing Company’s first brewer, Bob’s 47 has been around and loved for a long time. While you can get Bob’s 47 in a bottle, the company suggests you use a stein for true Oktoberfest style. The body is medium and has a caramel flavor.

First brewed in 1989, popular brewer Sam Adams also boasts their own Oktoberfest beer. Sam Adams Oktoberfest keeps their beer a deep amber color which they say is the hue of the season. Toffee sweetness is the signature flavor of this Oktoberfest brew.

Magic Hat Hex has a mix of caramel and toffee flavor with a smoky finish and is described as a German Ale. As Magic Hat’s fall brew, Hex is a fuller beer than a traditional Oktoberfest flavor.

Heavy Seas Marzen is perfectly named for the original Oktoberfest beers. Traditionally called a Marzen in Munich, Heavy Seas continues the real institution of Oktoberfest. Marzen boasts being the GABF Medal winner 5 consecutive years since 2006!

With so many different beers on the market throughout the season, it’s easy to stick with your favorites, but October is the time to try the Oktoberfest brews!  These special beers are only available for a limited time, until the end of October, so head over to On Tap Sports Cafe while you can still celebrate with Oktoberfest beers!  “Like” On Tap on Facebook for more information on beer and our specials!
